Douglas Ashby retired from the Los Angeles County Fire Department as Battalion Chief after almost 35 years in the fire service. He began his career in 1967 as a firefighter. He worked his way through the ranks with assignments as diverse as fire prevention, 9-1-1 emergency communications, special projects, and field operations as a battalion chief. He earned his B.A. degree from Cal State Los Angeles, and his Master's degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu. He is the author of Heroes and Giants, the heart-and-guts career of a California firefighter whose good days saw children saved and bad days saw loved ones lost.
